Liptov Castle – The Highest Castle in Slovakia
Liptov Castle – The Highest Castle in Slovakia
Liptov Castle (also known as Sielnica Castle or Liptov Old Castle) is a majestic castle ruin perched atop Sestrč hill (999.9 m above sea level) in the Chočské vrchy mountains, overlooking the villages of Kalameny and Bukovina. It was the highest castle in Slovakia and one of the highest in Central Europe – making it a truly exceptional destination for history buffs, hikers, and lovers of panoramic views.
A Story Spanning Centuries
The castle is first documented in 1262, when King Béla IV ordered its construction on the site of an older settlement from the 1st century BC. During its glory days, it served an important defensive function and from 1340 onward was the seat of Liptov County.
The castle experienced both prosperity and destruction – Hussite troops occupied it between 1431–1434, and the Pongrácz family later renovated it. However, in 1471, King Matthias Corvinus conquered and completely destroyed it following a failed anti-king conspiracy. Today, only a portion of the wall beneath an overhanging grassy slope remains.
Archaeological Discoveries
In the 1980s, extensive archaeological research was conducted at the castle. Scientists succeeded in:
- reconstructing and conserving the castle foundations,
- clarifying its gradual development until its demise,
- uncovering remains of two cisterns, a palace, and towers,
- discovering numerous arrowheads and blacksmith materials from a workshop beneath the castle wall.
The original castle consisted of a residential tower, cistern, small courtyard, and two gates.
