Ľubovňa Castle – a royal castle with a treasure story

Ľubovňa Castle is among those castles that have a "story". It does not stand merely as a backdrop – it witnessed political agreements, hid coronation jewels, and was visited by kings. It sits on a hill above the town of Stará Ľubovňa and appears from afar as a guardian of the northern border of Spiš.

It was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries at the initiative of King Andrew III and later became an important point of the so-called Spiš deposit, when the territory was under the control of Polish monarchs for over 350 years.

What makes Ľubovňa Castle exceptional

  • historical connection between Slovakia and Poland
  • the place where Polish coronation jewels were hidden
  • preserved walls, towers, and interiors
  • a strong combination of history + exhibitions + views

Experiences by age groups

Families with children

  • adventurous hike to the castle (moderate difficulty)
  • towers, walls, and underground spaces serving as a natural "playground"
  • possibility to combine with the open-air museum below the castle

Young people and couples

  • views of the Tatras and Pieniny directly from the castle tower
  • authentic atmosphere of a less "commercial" castle
  • interesting historical stories (kings, prisoners, treasures)

Adults and history lovers

The permanent exhibitions are among the richest in northern Slovakia:

  • Castle of kings and governors – the main historical line of the castle (monarchs, administrators, political events)
  • Polish coronation jewels – replicas of treasures that were hidden here from 1655 – 1661
  • Lubomirskis and Zamoyskis family – stories of significant owners of the castle
  • historical palace interiors – kitchens, cellars, hunting hall, living spaces
  • weapons and military defense – bastions, cannon emplacements, casemates
  • prison and fates of prisoners – including Móric Beňovský
  • distilling and brewing – a less typical but interesting part of the exhibition

The exhibitions are located directly in the authentic parts of the castle – from the basement to the tower.

Seniors

  • manageable hike with resting points
  • combination of interior and exterior
  • quieter environment than the most famous castles

The most interesting parts of the castle

  • gothic tower (bergfried) with a view
  • baroque palace with historical rooms
  • chapel of St. Michael the Archangel
  • renaissance bastions and underground corridors
  • castle well and technical facilities

What to see in the area

Ľubovňa Open-Air Museum

  • museum of folk architecture right below the castle
  • ideal combination of "castle + village"

Stará Ľubovňa

  • small historical center
  • suitable for a short stop

Pieniny

  • river Dunajec, hiking, rafting
  • supplement to the historical trip

How to fully enjoy your trip

  • plan for 2 – 3 hours at the castle
  • add the open-air museum (ideal half-day in total)
  • combine with a trip to Pieniny

Reality unembellished

Ľubovňa Castle is not as monumental as Spiš Castle nor as "comfortable" as urban chateaux.

But if you want a castle with real historical significance, interesting exhibitions, and a strong story (including kings and treasures), it is one of the best choices in northern Slovakia.
